Kawamata Archive 2026
This exhibition marks the third installment in the archive series, looking back at Kawamata’s activities in 2026. It brings together the artist’s diverse practices over the past year, including exhibitions in Japan and abroad, commissioned works, and ongoing projects. The exhibition will also feature new works from Tree Hut, Kawamata’s ongoing series of outdoor installations, created in trees within the Hillside Terrace complex and the Daikanyama T-SITE area.
Tadashi Kawamata has played a leading role in contemporary Japanese art. He was among the early artists in Japan to adopt installation art, developing a distinctive approach in which the process of making a work itself becomes an integral part of the artistic expression.
In 1998, he participated in the establishment of the Department of Intermedia Art at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts, as its founding chair professor. Since 2006, he has been based in Paris, actively developing projects throughout the world, particularly in Europe, as well as in the United States and Asia.
