About this exhibition

For this exhibition, Toyama has created her most ambitious work to date, 'Shiki Enzu' (Barn Swallows of the Four Seasons), a large-scale painting depicting barn swallows alongside the seasonal flowers and plants encountered throughout the year.

The artist

Toyama creates paintings that unfold like narratives, inviting stories to emerge from a single image, using 'kinun' (golden clouds) as a motif traditionally found in Japanese folding screens and handscroll paintings.

Born in Miyazaki, Japan in 1984; B.F.A. in Japanese Painting from Kyoto University of Art and Design in 2010; has received multiple awards including the Gold Prize at Japan Art Center Open Painting Competition and the President’s Award at Kyoto University of Art and Design Graduation Exhibition; works include mural paintings for the 'Saiun-no-Ma' Banquet Hall commissioned in 2024.
