About this exhibition

In recent years, his focus has expanded from the images he depicts to the materials themselves. He employs traditional techniques, including iron dyeing, while leaving room for the materials and time themselves to take part in the creation of each work.

The artist

Kohei Arano creates works featuring fictional characters and scenes, as well as relatable imagery rooted in everyday life. Incorporating painterly elements such as negative space and tagging, his practice explores the intersection of Japanese painting and street culture.

Born in Tokyo, he is currently based in Tokyo and primarily participates in exhibitions. He has received awards such as the Sponsor’s Award, 16th World Painting Award Exhibition (2020), and the Tomio Koyama Award (2023).
